Collaging the Tarot: A Self-Care Workshop

  • Likely General 389 Roncesvalles Ave Toronto, ON Canada (map)

After the symptoms of complex post-traumatic stress disorder appeared in 2016, I found it impossible to write. My life felt fragmented and so how could I possibly translate this experience into the coherency necessary for the written word? During this time I turned to two seemingly different self-care strategies: collage and tarot. In collage, I found an artistic practice that allowed me to take the fragments of different materials -- magazine images, washi tape, printed paper, paints and markers -- and turn them into something whole. In tarot, I was able to seek guidance for my seemingly disparate thoughts. I was asked to tune into my intuition and get grounded, even if just for a moment. And I found new avenues for creating stories. Both of these practices emphasize the power of intuition, the beauty of differing representations, and new practices for making sense of our oftentimes incoherent worlds.

Over the span of two hours, I'll provide participants with a brief introduction into tarot and some different spreads you can use for reading the cards. Participants will select cards from the various tarot decks provided to inspire their collage. There will be a variety of materials on hand to help you learn more about the cards you've selected, which you may or may not wish to consult before starting your collage. Collage materials will be provided, but participants are always encouraged to bring in anything of their own to add (a quotation from a favourite book, a photocopy of a photograph, etc.) Each participant will walk away with a collage inspired by tarot.
